Smile, NTSC video, 3:45 min. 1996
I asked a my most camera shy friend to sing Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" on video while dressed as a giant smiley face. Smile was an attempt to explore the awkward space between observation and performance and the expectations present on both sides of the camera. I was also interested in the song itself as a reference to show business and the "modern condition".
